SUBJECT: Theatre Guild eNews - August 8th - One Week to Go edition 2022-23 Guild Newsletter

August 8, 2022 One Week To Go Edition
President's Corner

It was great meeting all of you and your students this week at Registration. It was exciting to see our new Freshman get together at Summer Bash and to meet and greet with other Freshmen and upperclassmen. The energy was electric and they are pumped to become a part of the Booker T family.

I can't wait to share all of the great things the Theatre Conservatory has going on this year. Next week we will have an overview from Ms. Price, our Theatre Conservatory Director - so make sure to check out next week's newsletter!

I look forward to getting to know all of you this year and if you need anything or have a question – please feel free to reach out to myself or any other board member. We are here to help! Contact information can be found here:

We'll see you next week!!!
Summer Bash with Italian Flair

Last Wednesday our newest families gathered at Winfrey Point to hear Ms Price, Mr Gavitt, Ms D'Avignon, and Mr Miller describe the upcoming season, what they are looking forward to and how new students can get involved and earn  theatre hours towards induction into International Thespian Society. After the meal, a super energetic group of current BTW Theatre Conservatory and Musical Theatre students led the newest Pegasi in activities while the Head of the Theatre Conservatory Ms Guinea Bennett-Price spoke with the parents.

Big thanks to alumni parent Aletha Kruse whose hard work made Holy Cannoli! a BIG success. Aletha was joined by her actual family including husband Tim and daughter Faith Stevens (BTW '21) as well as her Theatre Guild family including Jennifer Gilligan, Tamara Woodchek, Larry Thompson, Amy Buehler, Rhonda Thompson, Karen Post, March Baremore, Jennifer Byrd, and Kathy Gameros.

You can submit the information via Facebook or contact VP Communications Kathy Gameros via email communications@btwtheatreguild.com

SPOTLIGHT ON THE GUILD

Founded to support both Theatre Conservatory students and faculty, the Theatre Guild asks members to donate their time and money every year. This occasional eNews feature is intended to highlight some of the ways that these donations benefit the Theatre Conservatory. This week we explore how the Guild awards scholarships to  graduating seniors, extending that support beyond the walls of Booker T.

Every year, the Theatre Guild awards two different categories of scholarships to graduating Theatre seniors who intend to pursue their Conservatory focus after high school.  In May, the Theatre Guild presented five Theatre Conservatory Seniors with scholarships, totaling $8,000.00.

The Louise Smith Scholarship is awarded in honor of the founder and first director of the Booker T. Theatre Cluster from 1976 through 2008.

The Karon Cogdill Scholarship is awarded in honor of the most recently retired Theatre Conservatory Director who taught at Booker T. for 44 years before stepping down in 2021.

While membership in the Theatre Guild is free, it is the paid membership levels and additional generous donations that allow the Guild to award these scholarships. Follow this link to upgrade your membership level or make an additional donation that will enable the Guild to support Booker T alums.

Class of 2022 Theatre Guild Scholarship Winners

The four recipients of the 2022 Louise Smith Scholarship are:

Zoe Gameros, attending the University of Texas at Austin to study Radio, Television and Film.

Jae Smallwood, attending Pace University in New York to earn a BFA in Acting.

Hannah Moore, attending University of Southern California to major in Theatre with an Acting Emphasis and a minor in Cinematic Arts.

Olivia King, attending Boston University in the Design & Production track in pursuit of a BFA in Theatre Arts.

The Sole Recipient of the 2022 Karon Cogdill Scholarship is Gavin Yi, attending Northwestern University with plans to obtain a BA in Theatre, and pursuing a sequence in acting and module in screen acting.

GET INVOLVED

There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer during the school year. As the Guild's Volunteer Coordinator Chair, Allison Francis will be seeking out Feed the Kids volunteers to serve meals to the cast & crew during each tech week. Guild members also sell concessions & merchandise before and during intermission at Theatre Conservatory performances.  There will also be lots of events all year long.

Remember to complete your voly application before volunteering at BTWHSPVA (or any DISD school).  You need to complete the voly application, orientation & background check every school year!

WAYS TO STAY IN THE KNOW
Guild Instagram
Facebook Page
Theatre Guild Instagram, Facebook page and Facebook groups explained

Booker T Washington HSPVA Theatre Guild is a newly created   Facebook page that will allow the Guild to widely share information about performance times or recognition/awards.  You may see FB posts from this page cross posted on the btw_theatre_guild Instagram account. Information shared on both platforms is visible to the public.

BTW Theatre Guild is a public Facebook group that has been used to share information and allows discussion among members.  As a public group, anyone on Facebook can see the group and join without administrative approval.

In addition to these public forums, the Theatre Guild has created private Facebook Groups for students and families in each grade level to join.  You can follow the links to the correct group by choosing your (student's) graduation year. You will be asked to answer two basic questions before your membership will approved. You will need to confirm 1) that you are either a student or the parent/guardian of a current student and 2) provide the student's name. These smaller private groups were designed with the idea of being able to post information relevant to a single grade level, to plan/discuss upcoming events and ask questions without making all the details publicly available.  Each of these private groups are limited to Theatre Guild administrators/moderators and members of the specific class so while the existence of the group is public information, posts are not viewable by non-members.
