IMPORTANT: DISD Issued MacBook Air

This year all BTWHSPVA students will be receiving a new MacBook Air. Here is some important information from the school about laptop pick up.

Sign the Contract. Parents MUST sign the LAPTOP Contract Agreement and bring the signed copy to the designated laptop pickup time. The contract can be found in the “Student New Laptop Distribution Information” drive on our school website home page under Campus Announcements.

Return Equipment. IMPORTANT: If the student attended a Dallas ISD school this past year and was given a Chromebook, Dell, or iPad, and/or a Hot Spot, it must be returned (with CHARGER) when picking up the new laptop at Booker T. Please tape a piece of paper to the Chromebook with the student’s name and the Dallas ISD school that issued the device.

Set a Password. In order to initially login to their new MacBook, students will need to have their new password ready. To prevent a long wait in the technology pickup line, please have your student set up their new district password ahead of time by going to the mypassword.dallasisd.org portal and creating a unique password. Instructions on how to set up a new password for current DISD students, and for new to the district students, are provided in the “Student New Laptop Distribution Information” drive on our school website under Campus Announcements.

Pegasus in the Wild

Over the summer and throughout the school year, many of our talented Theatre Conservatory students can be spotted on stage, creating magic behind the scenes or even on screen. The Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas recently congratulated Booker T Washington HSPVA Theatre senior Gracie Wakefield as one of the three 2022 Mary Anne Cree Young Woman of Distinction honorees. GSNT recognized Gracie as a passionate ally for the LGBTQIA+ youth community, who after interning with the Grant Halliburton Foundation the past two summers, wanted to educate and elevate the struggles of queer people to show them that they are not alone. For her Gold Award project, titled “Elevate LGBTQIA+ Mental Health,” Gracie created a website that aims to teach and uplift others about the struggles faced by queer people as well as provide a safe space for personal stories, pride information, mental health resources and more.

This year's Women of Distinction Luncheon, presented by AT&T, will be on October 28th.

Senior Corner

Seniors make sure you are signed up for a Showcase headshot photo.  TODAY (August 1st) is Headshot Day! from 10:30-1:00 & 1:45-4:00. Seniors need to schedule an appointment time in advance. Here is the link to sign up and pay $ 32 (plus tax) for Theater Showcase Headshots:

Please allow 60 minutes to check in, wait, and have your photos made. You get to select your favorites on-site. If you want help choosing your favorite image, you need to bring your family member or one friend with you.

Here are some answers to some common questions.

Clothing: Simple tops are usually best. Sleeves are preferred-skinny straps, or strapless make you look naked. Solid colors are not required but remember the focus is on your face and your connection with the camera-your audience. If wearing jewelry, keep it super simple.

Makeup:  Use Aquaphor/Vaseline/moisturizing lip balm beginning at least two days before to prevent dry lips. What you wear every day, maybe slightly heavier. (You should bring/wear your own makeup.) The trend of contouring with shiny highlights can look sweaty on camera. No glitter. Even if you do not usually wear makeup, some moisturizer, mascara, and lip balm are suggested for a natural look. Also, consider wearing a little bit of blush. Retouching will take care of blemishes. But it will be natural.

Looking fresh: Get as much sleep as you can starting at least two nights before. Drink a lot of water (always), especially the day before; it helps you look and feel refreshed and alert.

Senior Parent Zoom Info Meeting

The Theatre Conservatory will be hosting a Zoom meeting for Parents of Theatre Seniors on August 19th from 5:00-6:30 pm.  This is a great way to learn about all the amazing things that will be going on Senior Year.  They plan to record the call for anyone who cannot attend during the scheduled meeting.

College Applications

The Common Application for the class of 2023 opens today August 1st. While there is no need to panic, IF you plan to apply to college using the Common App, it is a good idea to get started so you are not rushed as deadlines approach.  Link to Common App

Get Involved

There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer during the school year. As the Guild's Volunteer Coordinator Chair, Allison Francis will be seeking out Feed the Kids volunteers to serve meals to the cast & crew during each tech week. Guild members also sell concessions & merchandise before and during intermission at Theatre Conservatory performances.  There will also be lots of events like Back to School Registration, Guild Meetings, Homecoming, Showcase, Arts Fest, I am Booker T Day & Senior Awards Dinner where volunteers will be needed.  Sometimes it's easier to donate items like water or snacks and those requests will also be organized by our Volunteer Coordinator Chair.

Would you like to help the Guild during back to school registration (August 1-4)? There is still time to sign up!

WAYS TO STAY IN THE KNOW
Guild Instagram
Facebook Page
Theatre Guild Instagram, Facebook page and Facebook groups explained

Booker T Washington HSPVA Theatre Guild is a newly created   Facebook page that will allow the Guild to widely share information about performance times or recognition/awards.  You may see FB posts from this page cross posted on the btw_theatre_guild Instagram account. Information shared on both platforms is visible to the public.

BTW Theatre Guild is a public Facebook group that has been used to share information and allows discussion among members.  As a public group, anyone on Facebook can see the group and join without administrative approval.

In addition to these public forums, the Theatre Guild has created private Facebook Groups for students and families in each grade level to join.  You can follow the links to the correct group by choosing your (student's) graduation year. You will be asked to answer two basic questions before your membership will approved. You will need to confirm 1) that you are either a student or the parent/guardian of a current student and 2) provide the student's name. These smaller private groups were designed with the idea of being able to post information relevant to a single grade level, to plan/discuss upcoming events and ask questions without making all the details publicly available.  Each of these private groups are limited to Theatre Guild administrators/moderators and members of the specific class so while the existence of the group is public information, posts are not viewable by non-members.

BTW Theatre Guild Class of 2023 is for Seniors & their families

BTW Theatre Guild Class of 2024 is for Juniors & their families
