SUBJECT: Theatre Guild eNews - August 15th - First Day of School edition 2022-23 Guild Newsletter

August 15, 2022 First Day of School Edition
President's Corner

On the first day of school, there is already an abundance of information and it's really hard for a mere mortal to compete with pictures from Jennifer Hudson's visit to Booker T.  Let me keep it short and say that I am looking forward to a great year & I hope you will join me at the Back to School dinner on September 20th.

Jennifer Hudson in the MAT

On Wednesday August 8, Jennifer Hudson surprised the cast of The Wiz when she came to their rehearsal.  Ms Hudson stayed to talk, provide advice and answer students' questions. She even asked the students to help her celebrate her son's 13th birthday by recording the cast singing Happy Birthday. You can check see it on Jennifer Hudson's Instagram. Earlier this year Ms Hudson made history at the Tony Awards, when she became the 17th EGOT. (EGOTs are individuals who have achieved the extremely rare honor of winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.)

All School Faculty Breakfast

The Theatre Guild hosted a back-to-school faculty breakfast on Tuesday August 9.   Students from the Theatre Conservatory and Musical Theatre Program spoke about their summer enrichment experiences. The faculty loved hearing from Kennedy Eagleton, Miles Sturn Thomas, Gracie Wakefield, Alexis Mutri, Phoenix Nady and Aiden Valentine.  Big thanks to Hospitality Chair Amy Bueller for this fun kick off event.

Puffs Auditions Coming Soon!

Director Lisa Cotie has scheduled auditions on August 24 & 25 from 5-7pm. Callbacks will be held on August 26 (as needed). Students should check the physical callboard and keep an eye on their Theatre Remind messages for updates.

Students are to prepare two CONTRASTING 1 minute comedic monologues.  Monologue choices should contrast very obviously: different genders, ages, species, aliens, maybe throw in a bad accent. (Director's instructions!) Irreverent monologues preferred. (Also per director's instructions)

Puffs is scheduled to open on October 12th and the run will end on the 21st

WAYS TO STAY IN THE KNOW
Guild Instagram
Facebook Page
Theatre Guild Instagram, Facebook page and Facebook groups explained

Booker T Washington HSPVA Theatre Guild is a newly created   Facebook page that will allow the Guild to widely share information about performance times or recognition/awards.  You may see FB posts from this page cross posted on the btw_theatre_guild Instagram account. Information shared on both platforms is visible to the public.

BTW Theatre Guild is a public Facebook group that has been used to share information and allows discussion among members.  As a public group, anyone on Facebook can see the group and join without administrative approval.

In addition to these public forums, the Theatre Guild has created private Facebook Groups for students and families in each grade level to join.  You can follow the links to the correct group by choosing your (student's) graduation year. You will be asked to answer two basic questions before your membership will approved. You will need to confirm 1) that you are either a student or the parent/guardian of a current student and 2) provide the student's name. These smaller private groups were designed with the idea of being able to post information relevant to a single grade level, to plan/discuss upcoming events and ask questions without making all the details publicly available.  Each of these private groups are limited to Theatre Guild administrators/moderators and members of the specific class so while the existence of the group is public information, posts are not viewable by non-members.
